What is sensation?
The stimulation of sensory receptors and transmission to central nervous system
What is perception?
The active process where our sensations are organized into how we see the world
What is the structure of the eye? (7)
Cornea, Iris, Pupil, Lens, Retina, Optic Nerve, Fovea,
What is the difference between rods and cones
Rods more sensitive to light, see in black and white
Cones see in colour
What is size constancy?
Assumptions that trick our brain into thinking one thing is larger/smaller than another
What is inattentional blindness?
Failing to notice things around us as we are distracted.
What is change blindness?
Failing to notice things that change, because we are focused on what’s important
What areas of the body are most sensitive and why?
Fingertips, lips, noses, cheeks.
Because nerves are more tightly packed.
What are nociceptors?
Neurons in the skin that create pain when stimulated
What are the symptoms of a migraine?(4)
One side of head, throbbing pain, sensitivity to light or smells, nausea
What are the triggers of migraines? (6)
Genetics, tiredness, stress, food, caffeine, alcohol
What is gate theory?
That the nervous system can only process a limited amount of stimulation at a time. Nerves are prevented from sending pain signals
