Chapter Five - Learning Flashcards
What is the definition of learning?
A relatively permanent change in behaviour, capabilities, or knowledge resulting from practice or experience
What is classical conditioning?
A form of learning that enables us to associate or anticipate certain response to events based on the continuous pairing of stimuli
What is generalization and discrimination?
Generalization is when a conditioned response is evoke by a similar stimulus
Discrimination is distinguishing between a conditional stimulus and one that is similar
What is operant conditioning?
When we learn to behave based on how our actions are reinforced or punished
What does reinforcement mean and what types are their?
Stimulus that increases repetition of behaviour
Positive = apply Negative = remove Immediate or Delayed Primary = basic needs Secondary = associations
What is the difference between positive and negative punishment?
Positive = adding an unpleasant stimulus to decrease behaviour
Negative = removing pleasant stimulus to decrease behaviour
Effectiveness of punishment depends on: (3)
Timing, Intensity, Consistency
What are the four types of schedules of reinforcement?
Fixed Interval
Variable Interval
Fixed Ratio
Variable Ratio
What did B.F. Skinner do?
trained pigeons and mice with operant conditioning
Who is Albert Bandura?
Bobo doll experiment to show how we mimic or repeat what we experience
Is gaming positive or negative?
Both. Gaming feeds the learning process by building on experience, develops motor skills, provides feedback.
It also normalizes violence, increases aggression, socially isolates individuals and is addictive
