Chapter One Flashcards
What is a system?
List the three systems and describe the movement of energy and matter for each.
A system is an organized group of related objects or components that interact to create a whole.
Closed- energy but not matter can escape.
Open- energy and matter can escape.
Isolated- neither energy or matter can escape.
What is ecology?
Its the study of earth and it’s systems.
Is Earth a closed or open system?
Both answers are correct, just explain.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
The changing balance of earth. Changes are continuously occurring.
The three structural zones are?
Atmosphere- gas layer
Hydrosphere- the water layer
Lithosphere- the solid area
Why is the biosphere consist of?
The biosphere is made of biotic and abiotic
What are the stages of life?
Biosphere- portion of the planet that supports life.
Biome- characteristic geographic and climate pattern which supports animal and plant population.
Ecosystem- a group of living organisms that interact with their abiotic environment.
Biological community- all species found in a given habitat.
Population- one species.
Organism- individual living thing
Organ- a group of tissues that work together.
Tissues- a group of cells that work together.
Cell- the structural basis for living things
Why is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the number of different species in an ecosystem.
What does DDT do to birds and other organisms?
DDT decreases the amount of calcium in the body, which can lead to fragile eggs.
What is an indicator species?
Will show how healthy or unhealthy an ecosystem is because the species is so affected by change.
Classification of abundance of species.
Endangered- close to extinction.
Extirpated- doesn’t exist in one part of a country.
Threatened- likely to become endangered.
Special concern- declining or low numbers.
