What is physical activity?
Any bodily movement that uses the skeletal muscles, and which expends energy
What is physical inactivity?
People undertaking insufficient physical activity to achieve measurable health putcomes
What is sedentary behaviour?
Amount of time taken per day sitting or lying down, engaged in non active activities
What is structured physical activity?
Tends to be planned eg. organised sport, going to the gym
What is incidental physical activity?
Unstructured physical activity taken throughout the course of the day eg. walking instead of catching the train, housework
What does MET stand for?
Metabolic equivalent
What is a MET?
Amount of energy you expend
What are the domains of physical activity?
Household/gardening, Active transport, Leisure time, Occupational
What are the dimensions of physical activity?
Frequency - how often?
Intensity - how hard?
Time - how long?
Type - what is completed?
What are the methods of assessing intensity?
Talk test, perceived exertion, heart rate, MET
What are the characteristics of lifestyle physical activity?
- performed daily
- expend more energy than rest
- easy to perform
