Chapter 9 - The Living world Flashcards
Populations and communities
What is a population?
A group of individuals of the same species, living in a shared space at the same time.
What are the three characteristics used to describe a population?
- Size: how large?
- Density: how packed?
- Distribution: where?
What are four factors that affect population size?
- Births
- Deaths
- Immigration
- Emigration
What happens to the size of a population when the births and immigration increase?
Population goes up (increases)
What is the equation that determines the number of individuals per one unit of area or volume (population density)?
Total space/area
Try this example: In Sarasota Bay, 122 dolphins were found in 100 km^2. Calculate the population density.
1.22 dolphins/per km^2
What are the three types of population distribution?
- Uniform
- Random
- Clumped
What characteristics belong to a uniform population
Organisms spread out in a fairly regular pattern
