Chapter 14 - The Technological World Flashcards
What is the difference between electronics and elctricity?
Electonics are made from semiconductors and have low intensidy currents resulting in finley controlled conduction. WHile electricity is made from conductors and have powerful currents which reults in not as finley controlled conduction.
What are electrical currents caused by?
The movement of electrons
What motion do electrons move wintin the circuit?
Back and forth direction.
What are the three differentelectrical functions?
- Power supply
- Conductors
- Insulators
What are the three types of power supplys?
- Battery
- Electrical outlet
- Photovoltaic cell
What are conductors
Things that allow electricity to run through them
What is an insulator?
Crods that prevent electricy from running through them.
What are the two types of protection?
for electricle currents
- Fuses
- Breakers
What is a fuse
If the current becomes too intense, the conductive filament melts and breaks, preventing the current from flowing through the fuse.
What is a breaker?
When the current becomes too intense, the metallic strip becomes hot and bends. The connection becomes broken.
What is a resistor?
A component in an electrical circuit designed to limit the flow of electrons through the circuit.
What is a control?
Switches that can open and close circits.
What happends when you close a circit?
When an electric current can readily flow in a loop. (turn on)
What happends when you open the siwtch?
an electric current cannot readily flow in a loop. (turns off)
What are the five generating electricity sources?
- Chemicle battery
- Piezoelectric
- Solor cell
- Alternator
- Thermocouple
