Q

A

The high Middle Ages were a time of crisis due to a number of reasons. Three of the most important were: 1.) The Hundred Years War 2.) The Black Death 3.) Church Reform. The Hundred Years War was fought between England and France as each country developed a sense of nationalism. After many English victories, Joan of Arc rallied the French troops to help defeat the English to help take back land the French had lost. The Black Death spread throughout Europe during the 1300’s. Fleas on rats that were transported on trading ships helped spread the disease that helped kill one out of three people. The Church was unable to provide effective leadership or help others because many priests and monks died from the plague. Due to lack of leadership, many reformers such as John Wycliffe and Jan Hus challenged the church to reform itself and its practices.
