Why did knight hood develope in feudal society and explain all three stages a person went through to become a knight
Knighthood developed in the feudal society because of the warfare and invasions taking place by the vikings, muslims, and magyars.
- A boy of nobility was chosen to be a page. A knight could move to the lord’s castle of an important friend or relative at the age of 7. A page did many chores in the castle. One chore including serving meals to a knight. They began their preparation for fighting with wooden stakes before swords.
- At 14 boys became a squire (an assistant to the knight) and learned to care for armor, chain mail, and horses and how to use weapons. He’d protect the knight if they fell in battle. A squire would have to work hard abd prove their bravery to become a knight at age 21.
- Only knights could grant knighthood to a squire in a ceremony calld dubbing. The new knight got tapped on each shoulder by the masters sword. Knights became men of war that were governed by a code of honor called chivalry which required them to be brave loyal and true to their word. In warfare, their code governed them to fight fairly and be generous to their enemies.

As power increased in feudal society, fewer and fewer people held the heihest ranking positions. In exchange for land, food, and protection, vassals would pledge service and loyalty to the higher lord.
-The king or monarch was at the top and rule the society. Their wealth and power was shown through the land owned and vassals under them.
-Below the king or monarch were the lords(nobles or priests) who held the largest fiefs. They were loyal to the king and provided military aid.
-below the lords were knights who protected the fiefdom through military service and adopted a code of chivalry. They also paid homage to their lord.
-peasants or serfs formed the base and made up the majority of medieval society. They lived and worked on the lord’s manor. (The manor was the lord’s edtate that included one or more villages and surrounding lands.) many serfs were bound to the land and would farm the land or pay rent to their lord.
