Crystals

A

A substance made up of different shaped Atoms and molecules. Depending on the weather conditions and types of elements present, as a crystal forms, determines how the atoms and molecules form and therefore, the shape of the crystal.

Lustre

A

The way a mineral looks, when subjected to light. A mineral can appear in a variety of ways ; see through, cloudy, shiny, dark, white gloss, silky or brilliant.

Q

Hardness

A

Term used to state the difficulty of scratching the surface of a solid material. The hardness of a mineral, is decided comparing it with 10 standard minerals. Diamond has a hardness rating of 10 and can scratch other minerals with a lower hardness rating.

Q

Metamorphism

A

A process changing rocks by extreme pressure, or heat.

18
Q

Metamorphic rock

A

Rock formed from another rock that has experienced extreme pressure or heat

19
Q

Slate

A

Metamorphic rock formed because of moderate heat and pressure on shale.

20
Q

Marble

A

Metamorphic rock formed due to great pressure on limestone.

21
Q

Gneiss

A

Metamorphic rock formed due to great pressure on granite.

22
Q

Mineral ores

A

Rocks mined to gain access to a metal or other chemical within them.

23
Q

Mining

A

Extraction of natural resources from the earth.

24
Q

Environmental impact statement (EIS)

A

Study of the theorised effects of a planned project on the environment.

25
Q

Rehabilitated

A

Restored to its previous condition.

26
Q

Overburden

A

Waste rock removed from below the soil. This rock is replaced when the area is restored.

27
Q

Open cut mining

A

Mining on the surface of the land.

28
Q

Underground mining

A

Mining deep below the surface.

29
Q

Stone Age

A

Around the beginning of time when the first humans made implements of stone.

30
Q

Alloy

A

A mixture of two metals and a non metal.

31
Q

Flint

A

A fine grained sedimentary rock which if broken, leaves a very shape engravement.

32
Q

Percussion flaking

A

A process where tool stones (Flint, Obsidian) are struck with harder stones such as quartzite. This removed large flakes that can be used to make small tools.

33
Q

Fossil

A

Remains of a pre historic animal to show evidence it once walked the earth.

34
Q

Palaeontologist

A

Scientist who studies fossils.

35
Q

Folding

A

When rocks are buckled due to being pressured from both sides.

36
Q

Relative age

A

When a different age of rock is compared with another age of rock.

37
Q

Carnivores

A

Animals that eat other animals.

38
Q

Scavengers

A

Animals that eat already killed animals remains after other animals are finished with them for e.g hyenas.

39
Q

Mould

A

Cavity in a rock that shows the sharp of tough parts an organis, for e.g types of fungi on the surface of foods.

40
Q

Trace fossils

A

Evidence of fossils such as footprint that provide evidence an organism was present when the rock was formed.

41
Q

Extinct

A

Describes when a species dies out. E.g dinosaurs are extinct.
