Chapter 9- Sedimentary, Igneous And Metaphoric Rocks Flashcards
Minerals
Substances that form rocks. Each mineral has its own chemical make up.
Lithosphere
The outer layer of the earth including the crust and uppermost part of the mantle.
Magma
A very hot mixture of molten rock from below the earths surface.
Sediments
Material decomposed by weathering and erosion that is taken away by wind or water to be collected in layers
Native Elements
Elements found untouched in the earths crust.
Crystals
A substance made up of different shaped Atoms and molecules. Depending on the weather conditions and types of elements present, as a crystal forms, determines how the atoms and molecules form and therefore, the shape of the crystal.
Lustre
The way a mineral looks, when subjected to light. A mineral can appear in a variety of ways ; see through, cloudy, shiny, dark, white gloss, silky or brilliant.
Streak
Colour of a mineral after it’s been ground onto rough white ceramic tile
Hardness
Term used to state the difficulty of scratching the surface of a solid material. The hardness of a mineral, is decided comparing it with 10 standard minerals. Diamond has a hardness rating of 10 and can scratch other minerals with a lower hardness rating.
Igneous Rocks
Rocks that form after the cooling of lava after it erupts from a volcano.
Extrusive Rocks
Igneous rocks that form if the lava cools above the earths surface.
Pumice
Rock that forms when lava has been shot out a volcano.
Scoria
Igneous rock that is formed from gassy quick cooling lava.
Abrasive
A substance that easily scratches another.
Basalt
Dark, igneous rock with small crystals due to fast cooling lava.
Obsidian
A black, reflective like rock that cracks into small fragments with smooth shell like surfaces.
