Chapter 8 Chemical Change Flashcards
Physical properties
Properties you can physically observe with your 5 senses
Chemical properties
Properties that describe how a substance Moines with other substances to form new chemicals
Flammability
An indicator of how easily a substance can catch fire
Reactivity
An indication of how likely a particular metal is to take part in a displacement reaction
Toxicity
The danger to your health caused from poisonous substances
Chemical change
Change that results in 2 substances forming a new substance
State
Condition or phase of a substance
Physical change
Change in size, shape or colour but not composition
Chemical reaction
A chemical change in which one or more new chemical substances are produced
Reactants
Chemical substance used up in a chemical reaction.
Products
New chemical substance that results from a chemical reaction
Precipitate
Solid created during chemical reaction, the solid goes down and precipitates at the bottom
Reaction rate
Speed at which reaction takes place
Enzymes
Special chemicals that speed up reactions but are not used up themselves.
Catalyst
Chemical that helps speed up chemical reaction
Rusting
The corrosion of iron
Corrosion
Chemical reaction that wears away a metal
Rust
Substance former when oxygen reacts with oxygen and water
Surface protection
Coating over a metal surface to prevent corrosion
Galvanising
Protecting a metal by covering it with a more reactive metal that will corrode first
Burning
Combining a substance with oxygen in a flame
Oxidation
Chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons by a substance
Fossil fuel
Substance, such as coal oil and natural gas formed from dead plants and animals
Combustion
The process of combing oxygen with a burning flame
