Chapter 9: Rates of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
reaction rate
A
- determined by the rate of appearance of a product or disappearance of a reactant
- changes the fastest at the beginning of a reaction
2
Q
factors affecting reaction rates
A
- nature of the bonds in reacting substances (covalent usually much slower than ionic)
- surface area
- concentration (collision theory)
- temperature (increase by 10* C causes rate to double or triple)
- presence of a catalyst (speeds up reaction by changing the amount of activation energy needed)
3
Q
Reaction Rate Law
A
rate=k[A]^a[B]^b where A and B are reactants
4
Q
reaction mechanism
A
-reaction cannot occur faster than the slowest step (rate determining step)
