Chapter 9 Hypothesis Testing Flashcards
Hypothesis Testing:
A statistical method that uses sample data to evaluate a hypothesis about a population.
Null Hypothesis (H0):
The hypothesis that states there is no effect or no difference between groups.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha):
The hypothesis that contradicts the null hypothesis, stating there is an effect or difference.
Type I Error:
Rejecting a true null hypothesis (false positive).
Type II Error:
Failing to reject a false null hypothesis (false negative).
P-Value:
The probability of obtaining test results at least as extreme as the observed results, assuming the null hypothesis is true.
Alpha Level (α):
The predetermined threshold for statistical significance.
Effect Size:
A measure of the magnitude of an experimental effect, independent of sample size.
Statistical Power:
The probability of correctly rejecting a false null hypothesis.
Statistical Significance:
The determination that results are unlikely to have occurred by chance.
