Ch 4: Measures of Central Tendency Flashcards
What is Central Tendency?
Statistical measure representing the center or typical value of a dataset
What is the Population Mean (μ)?
Average of all scores in a population
What is the Sample Mean (X̄)?
Average of all scores in a sample
What is the Median?
Middle score when data are arranged in order
What is the Mode?
Most frequently occurring score
What is the Nominal Scale?
Measurement level using categories with no natural order
What is the Ordinal Scale?
Measurement level with ordered categories but unequal intervals
What is the Interval Scale?
Measurement level with equal intervals but no true zero
What is the Ratio Scale?
Measurement level with equal intervals and true zero
What is Skewness?
Asymmetry in a distribution
What is a Positive Skew?
Distribution with tail extending to right
What is a Negative Skew?
Distribution with tail extending to left
What is a Bimodal Distribution?
Distribution with two modes
What is a Symmetric Distribution?
Distribution where both halves mirror each other
What is an Outlier?
Extreme value in a dataset
What is the Balance Point?
Point where distribution would balance (mean)
What is the 50th Percentile?
Another term for median
What is the Arithmetic Mean?
Sum of all values divided by number of values
What is the Distribution Shape?
Overall pattern of how data are spread
What is the Central Tendency Measures?
Collective term for mean, median, and mode
