2nd Edpuzzle Central Tendency and Variability Flashcards
The mean (arithmetic mean) is:
the point at which the distribution is in balance; The fulcrum or balancing point is calculated as this; first you add up all the individual scores there are. THEN you divide that number by The total Number of scores you had.
What is the mode?
the most frequently occurring value in the dataset.
What is the median?
the midpoint of a distribution: the same number of scores is above the median as below it.; find the middle TWO scores, add them together, and divide by 2
What does ∑X mean?
is the sum of all the numbers in the population; add all the scores (sum)
What does each X represent?
an individual score
If you add up all the scores in the (X-M) column, what value will you always get?
These are deviation scores and will ‘balance’ each other to zero
How to find the Sum of the Squares or (SS)?
Add all the values in the last column to find it
What are the values we used to find the variance? ∑
SS/N Sum of the Squares divided by the Number of scores
The standard deviation returns the variability measurement back into the original scale. The formula for the standard deviation is:
Square root of Variance
