Chapter 9: Covelent Molecules Flashcards
What is a Covalent Molecule?
A molecule that is formed when electrons are shared between two non-metals.
How are Double Covalent Bonds created?
They are created when two non-metal molecules share four electrons
How are Triple Covalent Bonds created?
They are created when two non-metal molecules share six electrons
Which element is content with only having one bond with another element?
Hydrogen
What is the first step in drawing a Lewis Structure?
Identify the total amount of electrons in each element
What is the second step to drawing a Lewis Structure?
Build a skeletal structure, with the lone element in the center, and the remaining elements surrounding it.
What is the third step in creating a Lewis Structure?
Label each element with their corresponding electrons, drawing bonds where lone electrons meet.
What happens to left over electrons in the lewis structure?
They go on the central atom as a lone pair
What happens if the central atom lacks an octet?
Lone pairs should be moved to make double / triple bonds
How many valence electrons, and bonds does Group 4A elements need?
Four Valence Electrons, and Four Bonds
How many valence electrons, and bonds does Group 5A elements need?
Five Valence Electrons, and three bonds
How many valence electrons, and bonds does Group 6A elements need?
Six Valence Electrons, and two bonds
How many valence electrons, and bonds does Group 7A elements need?
Seven valence electrons, and one bond
What is VSEPR Theory?
A theory stating that molecules take shapes to minimize repultions between electron pairs
What is Molecular Geometry?
It is the shape of a molecule, caused by arranging atoms
