Chapter 1: Basic Concepts of Chemistry Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything with mass that takes up space
What is an example of matter?
Atoms, Molecules, neutrons, protons, electrons
What is Data?
A description of characteristics
What is Quantitative Data?
Numerical Data
What is Qualitative Data?
Appearance
Based Data
What is a hypothesis?
An interpretation of observations, that can be proven or disproved.
What is a Law?
A summarization of past observations that predicts future observations
What is a Theory?
An explanation of why something happens based on gathered evidence, but cannot be proven.
What determines matters behavior?
Atoms & Molecules
What is an Atom?
A basic unit of matter
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms bonded together
Describe the phases of matter?
Solid, Liquid and Gases
Describe the solid state of matter?
Matter that has a definite shape and volume
Describe the liquid state of matter?
Matter that does not have a definite shape, but does have a definite volume
Describe the gaseous state of matter?
Matter that does not have either a definite shape or volume
What is a Pure Substance?
Matter with a unchangeable composition
What is an Element?
A pure substance composed of a single type of atom, that cannot be chemically broken down.
What is a compound?
A pure element composed of two or more elements
A chemical formula does what?
Shows which elements are in a compound, as well as its atoms.
What is the Chemical Formula for water?
H2O
What is the Chemical Formula for methane?
CH4
What is the Chemical Formula for Ammonia?
NH3
What is a mixture?
Two substances physically mixed together
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A uniform mixture of two or more substances
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A non-uniform mixture of two or more substances
