process through which someone becomes aware of personal characteristics, acquires information about opportunities, identifies career-related goals, and establishes action plans to attain specific goals

Identity Oriented Path
employees feel that their work is a big part of their identity and express themselves through their work
Contribution Oriented path
employees are interested in maximizing their contribution to social causes
Practice-Oriented Path
employees are engaged in learning and mastering their work but not intensely emotional about it
Networking
an organized process whereby the individual arranges and conducts a series of formal and informal meetings with their colleagues and contacts
Boundaryless Career
careers in which individual workers take responsibility for their own career management, changing employers and/or work units within employers, reject conventional linear career opportunities
Gig Workers
similar to boundaryless career but self-employed
Portfolio Career
career based on using ones skills to create a livelihood from multiple income sources
Management Development
any attempt to improve current or future managerial performance by imparting knowledge, changing attitudes, or increasing skills
Developmental Job Rotation
moving management trainees from department to department to broaden their understanding of all parts of the business
Mentoring
use of an experienced individual to teach and train someone with less knowledge in a given area

trainee works directly with the person that they are to replace
