3 CLASSES OF ETHANOL
beer
wine
hard liquor
OFF CHARTS
beer is made from rice & grain
whiskey is distilled from beer
rum is distilled from fermented molasses
gin & vodka are from fermented carbohydrates
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
alcohol percentages are denoted by volume
alcohol content is in proof
2 times the percentage of alcohol
ex. 50% alcohol means 100% proof
FERMENTATION
starts when sugar is dissolved in water then exposed to air
once exposed to air the yeast sets in and eats up the sugar left over
NO FERMENTED DRINK WILL BE ABOVE 15%
DISTILLATION
created to increase ethanol content of fermented beverages
involves heating a fermented mixture
TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT
saloons were the focal scape goat during this movement
turned into an abstinence from alcohol movement
PROHIBITION
came about in 1920
ended in 1933
SITE OF ACTION
serotonin
dopamine
main site of action is GABA benzodiazapine receptors
mixing alcohol with barbituates can result in an unexpected death
ABSORPTION
stomach to small intestines
DISTRIBUTION
blood alcohol content -> amount of alcohol in the blood
expressed as a % of weight of alcohol per 100 units of blood volume
legal dose -> .08%
lethal dose -> .45 - .5%
METABOLISM
90% in the liver is turned into carbon dioxide and water
EXCRETION
10% is in pure form
PEAK ALCOHOL LEVELS
30 - 90 minutes later
PYLORUS
valve that separates the stomach from the SI it shuts when you have consumed a certain amount of alcohol -> pylorus spasm
