PHARMACOLOGY
the neurotransmitter ADENOSINE is blocked by caffeine intake
absorption-> GI tract
distribution -> 2.5 - 7.5 hours (half-life)
metabolism -> liver
CAFFEINE’S PRIMARY ACTION
the stimulation of the CNS
PEAK LEVELS
15 - 45 minutes after ingested
then the caffeine is evenly distributed throughout the body

oral contraceptives
pregnancy
WHAT SPEEDS UP METABOLISM AND EXCRETION?
smoking cigarettes
CAFFEINE WITHDRAWAL
can meet the criteria for substance use most common w/d signs: headache & fatigue symptoms: (range from mild -> severe) 12 - 24 hours after stopping last a week 11% experience withdrawal symptoms
TOLERANCE
will not develop to stimulant effects
PHYSICAL DEPENDENCE
can happen within 3 days of regular use
BEHAVIORAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS
mood elevation

hand eye coordination decreases
INTERACTIONS AMONG CAFFEINE, NICOTINE, AND ALCOHOL
smokers, smoke fewer cigarettes after they drink coffee
smoking & caffeine increase metabolism
state dependent learning has a lot to do with these drugs and their interactions together

caffeine intoxication -> ~600MG of caffeine a day
by taking in more than 1,000MG of caffeine

about 10g for adults
equal to 75 cups of coffee
