Chapter 9 Flashcards
What happens in Chapter 9?
This chapter is a word-for-word transcription of the letter Lanyon intends Utterson to open after Lanyon’s and Jekyll’s deaths. Lanyon writes that after the dinner party, Jekyll wrote to him asking him, with the help of Poole, to break into the upper cabinet of Jekyll’s laboratory. He wanted him to bring the draw to his own home, and wait for a man who would come and claim it at midnight.
When they broke into the draw, they found a vial containing a red liquid, something that looked like salt and a notebook containing years of experiments.
Lanyon waited for the visitor at midnight. Mr Hyde appeared, but Lanyon hadn’t seen him before so didn’t recognise him.
Hyde mixes the contents of the draw, and asks whether he should leave or stay and drink it in front of Lanyon which would allow him to witness somethin incredulous. Lanyon declared that he wanted to see.
Lanyon watched Hyde drink the mixture and turn into Jekyll. Lanyon ends his letter here saying that what Jekyll said next is too shocking to repeat and that the horror has wrecked his constituion and that he will soon die.
