Chapter 1 Flashcards
What happens in Chapter 1?
Utterson and Enfield are taking their regular Sunday stroll, when the come across a neglected house that looks out of place in the neighbourhood.
Enfield relates a story in connection with it. Enfield was walking in the same neighbourhood one night when he witnessed a shrunken man trample a young girl. The crowd of people who gathered around the scene immediatly despised the man. The man didn’t want to have his name ruined so bought them off with one hundred pounds - which he got from inside the neglected building. However, the cheque bore the name of a respectable man. Enfield hypothesized that the ugly man had blackmailed the man whose name appeared on the check.
Utterson asks questions and Enfield says that the mans name was Hyde. Utterson states that he knows that name, and notes how he could guess the name n the check. However, on the topic of gossip, they dont discuss the situation further.
