Chapter 10 Flashcards

1
Q

What happens in Chapter 10?

A

This chapter is an transcription of the letter Jekyll leaves for Utterson in the laboratory.
Jekyyl says that he was born into a respectable family, and that this idealism led to him hiding a more frivolous and indecent side. He found himself leading a dual life, in which his better side felt guilty for his dark side. When studying science, he hoped to find some solution to his own split nature. He says that he dreamed of separating good and evil natures.
He eventually found the chemical. When taken, he felt vigorous and filled with sensuality/recklessness. He had become Mr Hyde who represented his repressed evil side.
Jekyll was not repulsed by the look of Hyde. (he experiences a “lea of welcome”. Hyde was a younger man who could act upon the his more embarrasing impulses. Jekyll furnished a home and set up a bank account for his alter-ego. He felt no guilt when Hyde, although he did try to right his wrong doings.
Jekyll began to involuntarily tun into Hyde, without the help of the potion. After trying to repress Hyde, he reemerged and it was in this wild state that he killed Carew. Hyde showed no remorse for the murder, but Jekyll prayed for forgiveness from God. This convinced Jekyll that he should never turn again.
Jekyll indulged in some of his darker desires, but this provoked the spontaneous turn into Hyde.
Hyde, with fear of being caught, called for Lanyon to break into his lab and get the potions. As soon as the drug began to wear of, spontaneous tranformation would begin. This happened during the INcident at the WIndow.
Hyde began to grow stronger as Jekyll grew weaker. Moreover, the salt necessary for the potion began to run out. He began to relaise that the original salt was an impurity. He used the final portion to compose the letter, as he realised that Hyde would take control. He knew that Henry Jekyll would be no more, either he will kill himself or be arrested and hanged.
