Chapter 9 Flashcards
Hydrocarbon
The simplest organic compound. They are entirely composed of carbon and hydrogen.
Alkane
Hydrocarbons that contain only single bonds. They are often called saturated hydrocarbons
Alkane
A hydrocarbon that contains one or more carbon to carbon double bonds.
Alkyne
A hydrocarbon that contains one or more carbon to carbon triple bonds
Saturated
Look it up
Unsaturated
An alkene or alkyne, a hydrocarbon that has more than one carbon bond.
Aromatic
And compound that contains a benzene ring or has certain properties like those of benzene.
Functional group
Atoms or groups of atoms that give a family of organic compounds its characteristic chemical and physical properties.
Alcohol
When a hydroxyl group(-OH) is substituted for any hydrogen atom in an alkane
Phenol
Aromatic compounds with the hydroxyl group attached to the aromatic ring. (An alcohol structure+ hydroxyl group) phenols act as acids, not alcohol.
Ether
Compounds with 2 alkyl groups bonded to the same O. General formula: R-O-R
Aldehyde
Organic compounds that contain a carbonyl group and has two other carbon atoms joined to the carbonyl carbon
Ketone
An organic compound that contains a carbonyl group and has two other carbon atoms joined to the carbonyl carbon
Carboxylic acid
O
II
R- C-OH
An organic compound that contains a carbonyl group.
Ester
Derived from carboxylic acids and are alcohols or phenols.
Esters are made from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. (Think of the sweet smelling lab we did)
