Chapter 7 Flashcards
Acid-Base Indicator
A test that determines if the substance is an acid or a base
Neutralization
The combination of H+ and OH- to form water
Salt
A cation from OH- and an anion from H+
Acid
A molecular substance that breaks up in aqueous solution into H+ and an anion. Acids are proton donors.
Base
A substance that releases OH-. Bases are proton acceptors.
Acidic Anhydrides
Nonmetal oxides that react with water to produce and acid
Basic Anhydrides
Metal oxides that react with water to produce a base
Strong Acid
An acid that reacts completely with water. PH= 1-3
Weak acid
An acid that reacts slightly with water. PH= 4-7
Strong Base
Reacts completely in water. PH= 10-14
Weak base
Reacts slightly with water. PH= 7-10
PH
A scale used to describe the acidity and basic its of a solution.
Conjugate acid-base pair
A pair of compounds or ions that differ by one proton.
Buffer Solution
A mixture of weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid. It maintains a pretty consistent pH.
Neutralization
Where an acid and a base form a salt and water
