Q

Rules for determining oxidation numbers

A
  1. An atom in its elemental form has an oxidation of 0.
  2. If an atom is an ion, the oxidation number is equal to its charge.
  3. Hydrogen and oxygen in compounds have an oxidation number of 1+ and 2-. (H= 1+, O= 2-)
  4. in a poly tonic ion or molecule, the charges have to be equal to the charges of the ions or molecules.
