Chapter 9 Flashcards
Aquifers
small spaces found within permeable layers of rock and sediment
Unconfined Aquifers
aquifers of porous rock covered by soil
Confined Aquifers
aquifers surrounded by a layer of impermeable rock or clay
Water Table
the uppermost level at which the water in a given area fully saturates the rock or soil
Groundwater Recharge
water from precipitation can percolate through the soil and work its way into an aquifer
Springs
where water from some aquifers naturally percolates up to the ground surface
Artesian Wells
drilling a hole into a confined aquifer releasing the pressure on the water allowing it to burst out of the aquifer and rise up in the well
Cone of Depression
an area where there is no longer any groundwater
Saltwater Intrusion
salt water adjacent to wells infiltrates the area of rapid pumping and makes the water in wells salty
Floodplain
land adjacent to a river
Oligotrophic
lakes that have low productivity due to low amounts of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen in the water
Mesotrophic
lakes with a moderate level of productivity
Mesotrophic
lakes with a moderate level of productivity
Eutrophic
lakes with a high level of productivity
Impermeable Surfaces
pavement or buildings that do not allow water penetration
