Chapter 9 Flashcards
What are latinos often doing?
Filling in the void (this is a joke, just something silly i saw in the textbook)
Brain Drain
The tendency for skilled/educated workers to migrate to the US, taking away the potential for them to benefit the economy of their country of origin.
Color Gradient
A different way of perceiving race, found in many latin american (and some western Asian) countries, categorizing people into more than just “black” or “white”. Often, if someone is liked they will be seen as higher up on the color gradient regardless of the actual color of their skin.
Marielitos
Cubans who left the port of Mariel in the 80’s to migrate to the US
panethnicity
the mixing and coexistence of several ethnic groups or cultural practices.
Pentecostalism
A popular form of religious practice in latin america, similar to the baptist church. Christian. Slowly becoming more popular than the catholic church!
Remittance
A payment from someone who has migrated to a new country (in this case, the US) to their family or valued people in their homeland.
Latin American general cultural swing vs trends in voting
Generally more socially conservative, yet usually vote Democrat because of more racial tolerance.
Dry foot, wet foot
If a migrant makes it to US soil, they are let in. But if they are caught in boat, they are sent back.
Familism
General importance of family and pride in one’s family and ancestry. Distant relatives more important than in white or black households.
Change in migration from south america over the past 20 years
Migration has increased by 70%!
General pattern of migration from south america
Sporadic, influenced by the conditions of individual countries over the years. Turmoil in individual countries like El Salvador can cause up to 30% of the population to move at a time!
How might the mass evacuation of 30% of a country’s population cause brain drain?
That 30% is a significant portion of doctors and skilled workers, plus typically the middle class are the ones who have the social mobility to escape from tumultuous conditions.
What sparked people from Cuba to start moving to the US more commonly?
The 1959 revolution! Fidel Castro.
