Arranged marriage
A system in which marriage is set up by the parents of the person getting married. Popular in southern Asia.
Bamboo ceiling
Asian Americans being kept out of higher paying jobs because of their race. Envy and an idea that they “don’t deserve to be so successful”.
blaming the victim
Putting the responsibility of bettering ones economic conditions on minority groups that cannot actually do so due to discrimination and deprivation of resources. Model Minority is an example of this - saying “oh look Asians are doing fine! if only the blacks could do the same.”
Chain immigration
immigration of one person, and then their family members, and then their family members, etc etc.

Local/indigenous, can also mean from Southern Asia (pakistan, India, bangladesh)
Gook syndrome
The tendency to view peoples migrating en masse from any country (coined by korean migrants) as the worst stereotypes possible of those people.
Haole
A person in hawaii who is not a native. White/japanese.
ilchomose
“1.5 generation”, people who migrated to the US as children during the korean war.

A korean-american kind of bank in which members pay contributions in order to take out loans, usually to start small businesses.
model minority
The idea of a minority group being successful and good for a country. Asian americans often cited as an example. Flawed, as the success of any group depends on how we treat and view them. Seeing asian-americans as “trustworthy” and “model” makes us more likely to give them good jobs and treat them well.
Sovereignity movement of Puerto Rico
Movement in puerto Rico to gain independence from the US. A couple acts of violence were seen in support of this movement.
Viet Kieu
Vietnamese people living outside of Vietnam.
Yellow Peril
Fear of migrants from eastern asia in the early 1900’s. Seen as lazy, drug addicts, etc.
