Chapter 7 Flashcards
Sundown Towns
Towns where non-whites are systematically excluded from living.
Slave Codes
Codes that dictated how slavery worked. Examples: Slaves children were also slaves. A slave could not marry. A slave could not own property.
Racial Formation
Associating a race with a position in society. Example: The roots of racism sowed in the US by the majority of slaves being Black Africans. Planted the idea of “Black = inferior”.
Abolitionists
People who were anti-slavery.
White Primary
Black people not allowed to vote in post-civil war south.
Colleges and slavery
Many universities, even in the north, accepted donations from slave plantations and college presidents even owned slaves themselves. Harvard even fired anti-slavery faculty! UVM didn’t (i think?).
Slavery Reparation
Making amends for the harm of slavery.
Booker T Washington
Wanted the approval of whites, wanted to make an accomodating argument for better conditions for blacks in america. Very popular. Basic summary of beliefs was, “The best way to improve the lives of blacks is to be as respectable to Whites as possible, look like we deserve the help”.
W E B Dubois
Argued that Washington’s politics encouraged whites to place the responsibility of blacks’ uplifting in society on blacks themselves. “Blacks wont ever ‘look like we deserve the help’ to whites without the societal uplifting coming FIRST. Otherwise blacks will always be impoverished and whites will think “they just need to pick themselves up by the bootstraps” (We still see this today!)
Founded the Niagara Movement, as well as doing a ton of research on race relations.
The Niagara Movement
A social movement formed by WEB dubois, believing that the responsibility to fix the conditions of blacks lay on the shoulders of the whites. Formed the NAACP in New York.
Restrictive Covenant
Paper form of segregation, forcing people to not allow blacks in certain homes.
De Jure Segregation
Segregation via schooling.
