Chapter 6 Flashcards
Allotment Act
Act that allotted marginal, or even worthless land, to native americans, in an effort to make them “more like white people” by “homesteading”.
Indian Removal Act
Borderline genocide, forced removal of native populations to give whites more land. In 1830’s.
White Perspective on Natives in early 1800’s vs late 1800’s
Greed, lack of care. Wanted them gone. But as time went on, more popular was the idea to “make them more white” via missionary work and allotment act.
Reorganization Act
1934, allowed native americans to group together politically to advocate for their reservations. Unfortunately, it was set up really awfully. At least it allowed them to reject policies made on their behalf.
Indian Reservations
federal plots of land, mostly in the midwest, for natives. Typically useless land, not profitable. Usually exploited.
Termination Act
Terminated the relationship between natives and the government, overall being awful, as while it allowed for a little bit more self governance, it mostly just destroyed their healthcare and government assistance. It wasn’t “favoritism” it was payback for nearly genociding them.
Employment Assistance Program and Native American wealth
Gives jobs to native americans! They’re much, much, much, much poorer than any other ethnic group. Total deprivation.
Panethnicity
A common identity shared by similar ethnic groups even if they are very different. Examples are “latino” and “asian american”
AIM
American Indian Movement. Known for school reform, police brutality watches, and alcohol rehab.
The Trail of Tears
Borderline genocide, forcible exile of natives in the winter in the southern US.
