Describe the major educational issues facing Black Americans today.
Instead of explicit segregation, schools in predominantly black communities have less resources and funding than White counterparts. In addition, most of history that they learn is Eurocentric, making it harder for Black students to associate with it. Black students are disproportionately put into generalized classes instead of college-prep ones. (Profiling)
What is de facto segregation?
Segregation rooted not in explicit racism but district lines and indirect methods.
Apartheid School
A school that’s all black.
“Acting White”
Speaking proper formal english instead of a cultural dialect, preferring rock music to hip hop, etc. A form of de facto segregation, but places the blame on “black culture” instead of the actual ways our schools operate and the racial profiling that occurs within them.
Name some challenges Black americans face in higher education.
- Reductions in financial aid and more reliance on loans than on grants-in-aid, coupled with rising costs, have discouraged students who would be the first members of their families to attend college.
- Pushing for higher standards in educational achievement without providing remedial courses has locked out many minority students.
- Employment opportunities, though slight for African Americans without some college, have continued to lure young people who must contribute to their family’s income and who otherwise might have gone to college.
- Negative publicity about affirmative action may have discouraged some African Americans from even considering college.
- Attention to what appears to be a growing number of racial incidents on predominantly White college campuses has also been a discouraging factor.
Employment Issues
Racial profiling (again), as well as underemployment. A lot of Black Americans live in central cities who are in a depression.
Theories on why single mother households are more common in Black families.
Lack of access to birth control, as well as difficulty for Black men to find jobs. Economic instability is a huge factor in divorces and single parent households, and Black families face significantly more than Whites.
Redlining
Subtle racism of refusing to sell properties in white neighborhoods to potential minority clients.
Zoning laws impact on black households
Only building expensive houses in suburbs discourages lower income people from moving out of depressed cities.
Differential Justice
Whites are handled much, much more leniently in courts and by the criminal justice system than blacks. A white man committing a traffic offense will be let go with a warning. A black might serve jail time or be killed.
Victim discounting
Caring less about the victim of a crime or awful thing because of seeing them as “not worthy”. Example: “Missing white woman syndrome” vs hundreds of black youth going missing without any media coverage.
medical apartheid
The unfair medical system in the US, de facto segregation of blacks into less funded/available/modern hospitals. This, and blacks historically being mistreated by the medical system, even used as experiments without consent.
