Explain Worden’s Tasks
Worden identified tasks as a way of focusing the clinical work on action oriented and goal derived aspects to move through the mourning process.
Explain Task 1 of Worden
Accepting the reality of the loss – Counselors must use specific language that affirms the loss.
Explain Task 2 of Worden
Working through the Pain of the Loss – Counselors must become comfortable with creating and maintaining the space needed by clients to express and work through their pain. – Counselors who have difficulty with emotions typically attempt to “cap” the patient’s pain.
Explain Task 3 of Worden
Adjust to an Environment in Which the Deceased (Substance) is Missing – The counselor has to help the patient restructure her/his worldview to honor the fact that the previous relationship with the substance is dead. In doing this, a new and realistic story of nonuse must be developed to take the place of the old story of use.
Explain Task 4 of Worden
To emotionally relocate the deceased and move on with life – This task requires the patient to compartmentalize the substance and fully immerse him or herself into a new and healthy life. – The counselor helps the patient foster new or profound resources of satisfaction that promote healthy living.
