Notes are kept to record Therapy Group and 12-step meetings do not have any notes taken.
Therapy Group sizes are 8 to 13 patients and 12-step meetings have no limit.
What is the difference between Inpatient vs Outpatient Addiction Group Counseling
o Outpatient group therapy ranges from 90 minutes to 3 hours and up to 3 times per week.
o Outpatient group therapy usually has 8 to 10 people to have optimal effect.
o How confrontation is used is different in Inpatient vs Outpatient… Confrontation is a technique whereby the counselor points out discrepancies between pt’s affect, behavior and cognition.
– The best and most effective confrontation comes from other group members and not the facilitator.
- When facilitator does confrontation, what makes it effective is timing and the skill.
- Temper confrontation with support and be mindful what transpires in the group.

This type of group combines counseling and education in one group. Information is provided on a topic and then discussion follows as to how the information applies to each person individually and how to apply in recovery.
What is an open ended group?

What is a closed ended group?
