What is the normal word order in a Tahitian sentence?
Verb+ Subject+ Object
te + verb + nei + subject
Present continuous or immediate future tense.
te + verb + ra + subject
Imperfect tense. “Was doing and has been for some time” Distant from the speaker.
‘ua + verb + subject
Past action and present state. Finished action with results in the present. ANY past tense.
‘i + verb + subject
Recently completed action.
‘i + verb + iho [nei, ra] + subject
Very recent past tense, to have “just” done something.
‘e mea maora + nominalized verb
Non-verbal sentence indicating the distant past.
‘ua oti + possessive adjective + noun + ‘i te + verb
Emphasizes the completion of a task or action. Substitute pau for oti when it refers to eating.
‘ua mātau + subject + ‘i te + verb
Habitual action.
‘e + verb + subject
Any future tense.
mai + verb + roa + subject
Frustrative form, “almost”.
verb + hia + subject + object + agent
Passive structure 1.
nā + agent + verb + subject
Passive structure 2, emphasis on the agent.
