How common are non verbal sentences?
Very. They are a part of everyday speech.
What is the first type of non-verbal sentence?
“It is/there is/ there are”
This type of sentence consists of the particle ’e (it is/there is),
a noun, and a locative/temporal phrase.
The first part consists of ’e + noun, while the second consists of to + locative/temporal phrase.
How can the first type of non-verbal sentence answer a question?
By just giving the first part:
‘e aha tēra? ‘e mā’a tahiti.
What is that? It is Tahitian food.
What does ‘e change into when the subject is a proper noun?
‘O. ‘O vau… It’s me. ‘O Teri’i… It’s Teri’i.
How is the negative formed in the first type of the non-verbal sentence?
By placing the negative particle ‘aita before the affirmative sentence: ’Aita ’e naonao tō ’onei. There are no mosquitoes here.
List the negative particle for the first type of non-verbal sentence in the increasing order of their intensity.
‘aore re’a ‘e - there is hardly anyone.
‘aita e’ - there is no one.
‘aita roa ‘e - there is (really) no one.
‘aore ‘e - there (really is) no one.
‘aore roa ‘e - there is absolutely no one.
When indicating many of a thing in the first type of non-verbal sentence, how is it formed?
‘e + numeral adjective + noun
The numeral adjective may be either raverahi or raverau.
‘e raverahi mau rātere - There are many tourists.
raverahi is many of the same kind
raverau is many of different kinds.
What is the second type of non-verbal sentence?
Identificational, which is simply a subject and predicate connected by “is”. “He is strong.” “The ground is wet.”
How is the second type of non-verbal sentence formed in Tahitian?
[noun+adjective]+[noun/pronoun]
‘e mea pa’ari te ūfi - the yams are hard.
‘e ta’ata puai ‘oia - he is strong.
How does the second type of non-verbal sentence respond to a question?
In the same way as the first, simply with the first part alone. ‘e mea ‘ohie, it is easy.
What are the two forms in the negative of the second type of non-verbal sentence?
‘e ‘ere - ‘e ‘ere ‘it te mea ‘ohie - it is not easy.
‘aita - ‘aita ‘e mea haumi te fenua - the ground is not wet.
What is the third type of non-verbal sentence in Tahitian?
Equational, where one thing is equated with another. It is normally formed with the demonstrative. “That is…”
What are the two forms of the third type of a non-verbal sentence?
‘e + noun + demonstrative.
‘e tumu ha’ari tēra - that is a coconut tree.
demonstrative + noun.
tēra tō’u metua tāne - that is my father.
How is the negative formed for the third type of non-verbal sentence?
In the same way as the second, ‘e ‘ere is placed first.
’E ’ere tēra ta’ata tōu metua tāne
What is the fourth type of non-verbal sentence?
It is the possessive.
