Chapter 8 - Transport In Mammals Flashcards
What is tissue fluid
It’s the substance that bathes the cells in the body. Exchange in substances between the blood and the cells occurs via the tissue fluid.
What three steps does the cardiac cycle consist of
- atrial systole
- ventricular systole
- ventricular diastole
Explain the process of atrial systole
Atria muscular walls contract, increases pressure further.
This cause atrioventricular valves to open & blood to flow into ventricles.
Ventricular muscular walls are relaxed (ventricular diastole)
Explain the process of ventricular systole
Ventricles contract.
Increases blood beyond that of atria.
This causes atrioventricular valves to close, and semi lunar valves to open.
Blood is pushes out of the ventricles into arteries
(Pulmonary & aorta)
Process of ventricular diastole
Atria and ventricles are relaxed
Blood will enter atria via vena cava and pulmonary vein.
Semi lunar valves in aorta and pulmonary artery are closed
Blood flows from veins into atria, and into ventricles

Name the reversible reaction, and what it is catalyzed by . (In RBC)
Co2 + h2o —- h2co3
Catalyzed by carbonic anhydrase
