Chapter 5 The Mitotic Cycle Flashcards
Describe what happens in the cell cycle during interphase, G1
Replicating organelles
Cells growing in size
Protein synthesis
What happens during to cells during interphase, the s phase
DNA doubles in size (dna synthesis)
End of s phase- all chromosomes will be replicated
What do cells who go in G0 phase (decide not to divide) do?
May differentiate, die or stop dividing
What is the overall process of mitosis?
Separation of chromosomes to opposite parts of cells, so cells can divide
Cell division
What happens during prophase?
SDDF
- DNA supercoils, into shorter, condensed structure.
- nuclear envelope disintegrates
- centriole divide, move to opposite ends of pole.
- spindle fibers form from centrioles, make up spindle apparatus.
What organelle do plants not have?
Centriole
But have spindle fibers formed from cytoplasm
What happens during metaphase?
- chromosomes attach to spindle fibers at centromere
- pulled along spindle fibers to equator of cell(center)
A.P
What happens during anaphase?
S.S
- chromatids on each chromosome separate, and pulled to opposite poles of cell.
- chromosomes split, while still attached to spindle fibers, moves to separate poles. (Motor proteins help)
Motor protons are used, what process occurs and which organelle helps?
Requires ATP, mitochondria gather round spindle.f
What happens during telophase?
- nucleus reappears
- N.E disintegrates
- chromosomes lengthen & uncurl
RDL
Cytokinesis in animals?
Membrane folds inwards
