Chapter 8 - Taking the Order Flashcards
What is the IDAD process and what are its four steps?
IDAD is a baseline fundamental process for taking an order. It includes four steps: Intake, Discovery, Analysis, and Decision
What is the purpose of the Intake phase in the IDAD process?
The purpose of the intake phase is to receive the order and associated information, with the goal of creating a clearly defined problem statement
Why is it important for a Trusted Learning Advisor to take the order?
Taking the order demonstrates a willingness to help, opens the door to a relationship, and allows you to showcase your capabilities as a consultative business partner. Taking the order is also an opportunity to begin the work
What is the difference between being an order taker and taking the order as a Trusted Learning Advisor?
An order taker executes the order passively without proper intake and analysis, while a Trusted Learning Advisor listens to the stakeholder’s request and conducts their own due diligence to gain a deeper understanding of the problem
What are the benefits of having a well-defined intake process?
A well-defined intake process improves consistency, helps with alignment and prioritization, and supports project portfolio stability. It also helps stakeholders perceive you as a Trusted Learning Advisor
What are the common channels through which L&D may receive orders?
Orders are generally received via email, electronic request forms, or verbally
What should you do after receiving a verbal request from a stakeholder?
Follow up the verbal request by using a database-type tool to capture the initial information, and then conduct a secondary discussion to gather the remaining information needed for the problem statement
What are some of the key questions to answer during the Discovery phase?
During the discovery phase, you should seek to understand: What is the problem? Who is it a problem for? and Why is it a problem. You also need to understand the context driving the request
What is the focus of the Discovery phase?
The Discovery phase is focused on uncovering the real problem, often hidden beneath the initial request, and understanding the problem from both the stakeholder’s and the learner’s perspectives
What types of research might be used in the Discovery phase?
Both qualitative (e.g., interviews, focus groups, observations) and quantitative (e.g., surveys) research can be used
What is the purpose of the Analysis phase in the IDAD process?
The purpose of the analysis phase is to examine and evaluate the collected data to provide necessary context, determine if L&D is the appropriate solution, and to make useful for the decision-making phase
What should you do if your analysis indicates that L&D is not the right solution?
You should document the finding and communicate this to the stakeholder, along with your reasoning
What are some analysis tools you can leverage?
You can use tools such as thematic analysis, Microsoft Excel, and Six Sigma methodologies
What are the four potential outcomes in the Decision phase, according to Guy Wallace?
The four options are to: 1) end the project; 2) defer the project; 3) modify the project; or 4) approve the project. An additional option is to pilot/prototype an alternative solution
What skills are most important during the Decision phase?
Influencing, negotiation, consulting, and communication skills are key during the decision phase
