Boot Configuration Data (BCD)
The configuration information used by Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10 to determine how to start (boot) the system.
malware
Malicious software; software designed to infiltrate a computer system
and possibly damage it without the user’s knowledge or consent. Malware is a broad
term that includes viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, rootkits, adware, and other types of unwanted software.
pop-up
An ad or other web content that appears in a small browser window. Some
websites use popups when a user clicks a link, but most pop-ups are unsolicited
advertising, and some contain links to malware.
browser redirection
Unauthorized change of the home page, error page, or search page in a web browser to another URL. Can be caused by malware or by apps the user installs that do not allow for opt-outs to these changes when the apps are installed.
rogue antivirus
A malware program that masquerades as a legitimate antivirus program
spam
Unwanted email
invalid certificate
A certificate that is provided to an attacker under false pretenses and can be used to take over a system
log
An event record stored by an OS or app. In Windows, various logs are available in the Event Viewer node of Computer Management
antivirus software
Software that provides real-time protection against threats from local files, websites, and email
anti-malware software
Software that scans for infections that might have been missed by antivirus software
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)/Recovery Console
a tool that can be used to try commands in a safe environment in an attempt to resolve an issue. Previously known as
Recovery Console in Windows XP.
system lockout
A user’s inability to log into a system because the password is forgotten or unknown.
soft reset
The process of shutting down a mobile device and restarting it.
hard reset
Also known as factory reset, a process that clears all user information from a mobile device and resets it to as-shipped (factory) condition.
power drain
An issue causing a device’s power to rapidly deplete.
