keyboard
an alphanumeric data entry device with a typewriter-style keyboard, additional functional, numeric, directional, and text-editing keys. It connects via a USB or PS/2 keyboard port. Also includes Fn keys for special functions
pointing device
A general term for any mouse-type device
hard disk drive (HDD)
A mass storage device
solid-state drive (SSD)
A hard drive that uses flash memory instead of magnetic storage platters
solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD)
A drive that combines a solid-state cache with magnetic capacity. It uses a memory manager to choose the most common files for the fast cache
smart card
A credit card-sized card that contains stored information and might also contain a simple microprocessor or an RFID chip
Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)
a 32-bit I/O bus that provides 33MHz or 66MHz data path between the CPU and peripheral controllers
mPCIe
A slot used for diagnostic cards and for WiFi networking on recent laptops
wireless card
A WiFi adapter or a USB-based wireless adapter
Direct current (DC)
the type of electrical current supplied by batteries or by a PC’s power supply
LCD
flat panel display technology commonly used in TVs and computer monitors. It is also used in screens for mobile devices, such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones
Organic light-emitting diode (OLED)
a type of display that uses organic compounds that emit light
Fn
Function; a special key on laptop keyboards that, when pressed, enables other keys to perform additional tasks, such as adjusting screen brightness or toggling the Windows desktop to an external display
docking station
A device that enables laptops and other mobile devices to use devices that are not built in, such as card slots, high-end audio and video ports, and so on; requires a proprietary, dedicated external bus connector
cable lock
A lock that uses a multistranded security cable to help prevent the theft of a computer or another technology device. Sometimes called a Kensington lock
rotating/removable screen
A feature of two-in-one devices that allows such a device to be used as both a tablet and a laptop
VR/AR
Computer simulations projected into an eye-covering headset (VR) or images layers on camera captures of the real world (AR)
Global Positioning System (GPS)
a worldwide system of satellites that provides information concerning the locations of mobile devices and anything else with a GPS receiver
mini-USB
A Type B USB cable (USB 1) used in cameras, phones, and so on
Lightning
The proprietary, reversible Apple iOS sync/charging USB 2.0 connector. Used on older iOS devices
hotspot
A method for sharing a smartphone’s Internet access via WiFi
Near field communication (NFC)
a feature included in many mobile devices such as tablets for data transfer and shopping
Bluetooth
A short-range wireless network used primarily by mobile devices
Infrared (IR)
wireless technology waves used to transmit data. Best for short-range communication. Also used in TV remote controls
tethering
the linking of a computer or other device to a smartphone in order to connect to the internet
Airplane mode
A mobile device setting that turns off any wireless antenna in the device, including cellular and GPS antennas
pairing
The process of connecting two wireless devices together, such as a Bluetooth or wireless mouse or keyboard and its receiver
Personal identification number (PIN)
a number that identifies an authorized user for items like smartphones and debit card transactions
Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3)
an email protocol used by client computers to download or receive email.
uses port 110
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP4)
an mail protocol that enables messages to remain on the email server so they can be retrieved from any location.
uses port 143
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
a protocol that is used for securing online transactions.
The predecessor of TLS
Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME)
a standard for secure email connectivity
Preferred roaming list (PRL)
a list in a wireless phone or another device that is used to select from available phone carriers for access to phone systems
baseband
Firmware in a smartphone or tablet that translates cell signals to and from the onboard CPU
International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI)
a number used to identify a cell phone on the GSM, UMTS, LTE, and iDEN networks.
Some vendors refer to these numbers as IMEI/MEID numbers
International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI)
a number used to identify a subscriber using a cell network. It is usually stored in the phone or tablet’s SIM card
VPN
A private and secure network connection that is carried by an insecure public network, such as the Internet
smart card reader
A card reader that can be built into a laptop or connected via USB for reading smart cards
