Chapter 8 - Sedimentary Rocks Flashcards
Clastic Sedimentary
-Has layers
- pieces of broken rock
- can be fine and grainy or like mudstone
- When sediments are deposited compacted and cemented
- may contain fosils
Chemical Sedimentary
A type of rock that forms when dissolved minerals crystalize within sediments, usually as water evaporates and leaves minerals behind
Biogenic Sedimentary
A type of rock that forms when dead plant or animal remains accumulate and are cemented together
e.g. chalk, coal
-many layers, no clear sediments, soft and brittle
Strata
layers of sedimentary rock
index fossils
Fossils used to compare starta from different regions
why do only some organisms become fossils
They have to be buried while they are dying or straight after dying.
How are fossils made?
-Buried in low oxygenated areas and decay underground slowly
Compact and cement
compacted - the rocks squeeze out water
cementing - minerals in water left behid crystalize cementing them together. SIlia and limestone help stick it together occurig from groundwater
