Chapter 8 - Mineral Resources Flashcards
Minerals
Naturally occurring chemical substances that make up rocks
Ore
A mineral that contains a metal or some other valuable material
Native elements
a pure element of ore minerals, like gold silver and copper
Compound elements
ore minerals made up of multiple elements, like malachite, made of copper and carbon, and oxygen
Mineral formation - sedimentary rock
dissolved mineral evaporates, leaving mineral crystals behind. eg dripstone stalgmites and tites
Mineral formation - crystals
can happen in salt lakes or inside hollow rocks, eg amethyst
Procces of obtaining minerals
Mining- mineral removed from ground
Proccessing - unwanted minerals removed, valuble extracted
rehabiltation - mining site returned to original
Strip
When strips/pits are dug on the surface to reach the wanted ores.
Dredge
When ore is pumped out from underwater, usually by a boat sitting on the ocean surface
Shaft
When tunnels are dug underground to reach wanted ores.
Leach
When chemicals are pumped into the ground to dissolve the wanted minerals. The solution of minerals are then pumped back up.
