Chapter 8 - Redox Potential Flashcards
Oxidation
When a species loses electrons
For ex: O2 + 4H + 4e- -> H2O
Reduction
When a species gains electrons
For ex: Fe2+ -> Fe3+ + e-
Corrosion of water supply pipes
Clog pipes, increase consumers intake of metals (like iron), and costs billions of dollars annually. The corrosion occurs because of redox reactions
Standard Reduction Potential
The more positive E, the greater the tendency for the species to be reduced. Half cell reactions are reversible.
Nernst equation logK =
logK -> log(1/reactants)
How do we measure redox potential?
Portable meters, colorimeters
Eh decreases with….?
Decreasing dissolved O2 concentration
What kind of relationship is there between Eh and pH?
Inverse relationship
