Chapter 8- Rates Flashcards
The effect of temperature ok reactions-
Sodium thiosulphate + hydrochloric acid —> sodium chloride + sulphur + sulphur dioxide + water
1) measure some sodium thiosulphate into a test tube and pet a bung inside
2) measure out less of hydrochloric acid and put in a new test tube with a bung inside
3) put in a water bath of 40•c
4) make a cross and put it under a beaker
5) pour test tubes into a beacker and put a timer on
6) when you cannot see the symbol, stop the timer
7) repeat steps 1-6 again at the water bath 50, 60, 70 and 80
Chemical reactions can only occur when…
Particles collide in its each other to make a sufficient energy
Rate of reaction=
Volume of gas/ time
The minimum amount of energy needed for the reaction to happen is called the…
… activation energy
Catalysts-
It lowers the activation energy so it can reached quicker so the reaction can happen faster
They are transition metals so they are found in lots of places
The 5 things that can change the rate of reaction-
1) increasing temperature
2) increasing concentration
3) increasing pressure
4) increasing surface area
5) adding a catalyst
Anhydrous-
Without water
Dynamic equilibrium-
Occurs in a reversible reaction that takes place in both directions within a closed system and a catalyst has no affect on the equilibrium
