Chapter 2- Periodic Table Flashcards
Arranged in..
Order of increasing atomic number
Metals are…
Shiny, good conductors, malleable
Magnesium + oxygen —>
Magnesium oxide
Non-metals are…
Dull, poor conductors, weak and brittle
Sulfur + oxygen —>
Sulfur dioxide
Metals are acidic or alkaline?
Alkaline
Non-metals are alkaline or acidic?
Acidic
what is ionic bonding?
a metal and a non-metal react together. there are tow shells, and they don’t bond together, but one reduces its electrons, so the other one gains. therefore, they both have full outer shells. they are put into brackets
what is covalent bonding?
when two non-metals react and bond totters so they both have full outer shells. they will physically bond together to get full outer shells
what is metallic bonding?
when metal are arranged in a large lattice, and it contains positively charged metal ions and negatively charged delocalised electrons. the bonding is the strong attraction that is created by the two bonding together
what are intermolecular forces?
the forces that hold together ions
why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
because the ionic bonds are really strong therefore a lot of energy is needed to break the bonds
what are some examples of giant covalent bonds?
graphite, diamond and sand
what is a simple covalent bond?
has individual molecules that have strong covalent bonds within the molecules, but weaker intermolecular forces between the molecules. STRONG COVALENT INSIDE, WEAKER INTERMOLECULAR BETWEEN
what is an isotope?
the same amount of protons and a different amount of neutrons
