Chapter 8: Patterns and Properties of metals Flashcards
What are some characteristics of the alkali metals (group 1)?
increase reactivity down the group
very reactive with exothermic reactions
often found with other elements (+1)
test with flame test
What are some characteristics of the alkaline earth metals (group 2)?
increase reactivity down the group
common metallic properties (+2)
they are strong reducing agents
react with halides to form ionic compound and react with oxygen to form oxides
test with flame test
What are some characteristics of aluminum?
very common metal
low density, light but strong and a good electrical conductor
very reactive but has an aluminum oxide layer that protects it
What are some uses of aluminum?
used in manufacture of aircraft
used in food containers because of corrosion resistance
What are the tests for aluminum?
NaOH: forms white precipitate which dissolves in excess to form a colorless solution
NH3: forms a white precipitate which is insoluble in excess
What are some physical properties of the transitional elements?
hard and strong
high melting points and densities
good electrical and heat conductors
What are some chemical properties of the transitional elements?
not very reactive
useful for structural materials
form colorful compounds
have more than one oxidation state
What is the metal reactivity series?
potassium
sodium
calcium
magnesium
aluminum
carbon
zinc
iron
tin
lead
hydrogen
copper
silver
gold
platinum
How is the reactivity series of metals determined?
it’s determined by the metals ability to loose electrons and form a positive ion.
What is an electrochemical cell?
when you connect two metals with a strip of wire and electrons flow between the metals which results in an electric current.
