Chapter 11: Petrochemicals and polymers Flashcards
what are the 3 main fossil fuels?
-coal
-petroleum
-natural gas
What are all the different fractions of petroleum and their uses?
refinery gas: bottled gas for heating and cooking
petrol/gasoline: car fuel
naphta: chemicals
parrafin: jet fuel
diesel: diesel engines
fuel oil: ships and heating systems
lubricating oil:
bitumen: making roads
What is catalytic cracking?
the process that breaks up fractions of petroleum with too high boiling points
an alkene is broken into an alkane and an alkene (smaller) or two or more smaller alkenes and hydrogen
What are polymers?
large molecules built up from small units (monomers)
Define macromolecule:
any molecule containing a large number of atoms
What is polymerization?
a process of bonding monomers together to form a polymer
What is addition polymerization?
same type of monomer added over and over again to make a polymer
What is condensation polymerization?
monomers of different kinds that are unsaturated that come together and form a polymer and another product like (water)
