Chapter 8 - Other evidence of evolution Flashcards
What is biogeography
The study of where in the world plants and animals live
What is Pangaea
A supercontinent of all the land masses (250 million years ago).
The land began to break a part and move away until continents were formed.
Some organisms were separated/extinct since they couldn’t adapt
What two continents were formed from Pangaea?
Laurasia (North America and Eurasia)
Gondwana (Australia, Antarctica, India, South America, Africa)
What is structural morphology?
physical structure
What is comparitive morphology?
Comparing the base structures of two different species
What is the homologous structure?
Basic structure of a particular feature is similar in two different species, but have different functions
What is a recent common ancestor?
A single species from the past that evolved in different ways to result in the species being examined
What is comparitive embryology?
Different animals can be compared at different stage of development
What is cladistics?
Process of classifying and grouping organisms based on their common ancestor
What is a clade?
Group of species that share a common ancestor
What is a phylogenetic tree?
Shows the evolutionary history (phylogeny) of a species or group of species.
