Chapter 5 - Mutation Flashcards
Define mutation
any change to the base sequence of an organism’s DNA
What are the two types of mutation?
Somatic mutation and germline mutation
What is somatic mutation?
- occurs in somatic cells
- not heritable
- cannot be passed onto offspring
What is germline mutation?
- occurs in gametes
- heritable
- can be passed onto offspring
example: downsyndrome
What is nondisjunction?
occurs when the homologous pairs/sister chromatids fail to separate during anaphase I or II
Define aneuploidy
results in somatic cells/gametes with an incorrect number of chromosomes
What is polyploid?
When the cell has more than two sets of chromosomes
What is monosomy?
cell has only one copy of that chromosome
What is trisomy?
Daughter cells receive both sister chromatids and have three copies of the same chromosome.
When does meiotic nondisjunction occur?
occurs at either anaphase I or II
