Chapter 3 - Dihybrid inheritance Flashcards
Dihybrid crosses
A cross between two individuals that are heterozygous for two gene loci.
Linked genes
Two genes on the same chromosome that are inherited together more often than they are inherited independently.
Unlinked genes
Genes that are inherited independently of each other. They may be on different chromosomes, or far apart on the same chromosome.
Crossing over
When genetic material is swapped between two homologous chromosomes, during prophase I of meiosis.
Locus
Loci (plural)
The position of a particular gene on a particular chromosome.
Chiasma
The point where the chromatids of homologous chromosomes cross over.
Independent assortment
Where the inheritance of one particular gene has no influence on the inheritance of a different particular gene. That is, the genes are unlinked.
Recombinant
A description of a gamete or offspring that has a genotype that is the result of crossing over.
Chromosome mapping
The process of determining the locus of every gene on every chromosome of a species.
What does the dihybrid entail?
Crossing between a true-breeding individual who has dominant of two traits, and another true-breeding individual who is recessive for the two traits
Independent assortment
Gametes will be organised in equal proportion
